Norfolk Residents Find That Recycling Really Does Pay!
This fall, more than 1700 Norfolk residents pledged to recycle more at home or work, encourage their families and friends to recycle, and even to purchase recycled items. From that whopping number, 18 were chosen at random and awarded $100!

Winning entries came from all over Norfolk, and recipients beamed as they accepted their reward for recycling in Norfolk.

How can I EARNN $$ for my neighborhood?

Recycling prevents unsightly litter, reduces the amount of solid waste sent to the landfill and helps conserve our natural resources. Did you know that plastic is made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource that we use for fuel?
Does the City of Norfolk take care of my recycling?
The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) picks up your recycling. The City of Norfolk is one of 8 municipalities that are members of SPSA and receive their services.
What can I place in my recycling cart?
Newspaper, glass (clear, brown and green), plastic bottles & jugs, steel cans, unwanted mail, cardboard, magazines, telephone books, and aluminum cans, pie plates and foil.
When is my recycling picked up?
Curbside collection of recyclable materials takes place every other week, on the same day as your regular trash collection. Still unsure? Call 548-2256 or 441-1347 or go to This City of Norfolk and click on the blue recycling cart for your correct dates.
How can I request a 2nd recycling cart (in addition to the one I already have)?

What if I live in an apartment building or can't wait until my collection date?
You can take your recyclables to any one of the two drop-off sites in Norfolk*. These sites are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and also accept flattened cardboard boxes. Drop-off sites are located at: the corner of 17th St.& Colonial Ave.(Maury High School); Security Lane off of North Military Highway, next to Norfolk Technical Vocational School.

* Note. Mixed office paper may not be included in the newspaper container
What can I do with electronics, old paint and chemicals from around my home?
These items, including antifreeze, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, paint thinners, swimming pool chemicals, gasoline, kerosene, household cleaners, used motor oil, and household batteries may be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection Facility Mon-Sat, 10am-2pm. 1176 Pineridge Rd. (Industrial Park), Norfolk. For details, call 441-5813. FREE TO ALL NORFOLK RESIDENTS (only). Click here for a map.
How can I recycle used batteries?
These items, including antifreeze, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, paint thinners, swimming pool chemicals, gasoline, kerosene, household cleaners, used motor oil, and household batteries may be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection Facility Mon-Sat, 10am-2pm. 1176 Pineridge Rd. (Industrial Park), Norfolk. For details, call 441-5813. FREE TO ALL NORFOLK RESIDENTS (only). These batteries can also be dropped at the Ernie Morgan Center 24-hours. Rechargeable batteries can be taken Virginia Beach Landfill or Suffolk Regional Landfill, Monday-Saturday, 8am-4pm. There are also over 20 stores and other sites in Norfolk that accept rechargeables. What do I do with old clothing that isn't fit for donation?
Old textiles (clothing, shoes and other fabrics) can be dropped in special containers (see below) located at the Norfolk drop-off recycling centers. Centers, located at the corner of 17th St.& Colonial Ave.(Maury High School) and on Security Lane behind the Norfolk Vocational and Technical School off N. Military Hwy, are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The materials are then resold or recycled into new textiles and shipped to overseas markets.
