This led to her thesis on rooftop greenhouses, a concept that combines her interests in building technology and cultivation.
Benefits of Rooftop Greenhouses
Rooftop greenhouses offer a multitude of advantages. Firstly, they utilize otherwise unused rooftop spaces, providing an opportunity for urban food production without requiring additional land. This method of cultivation also contributes to energy savings for the buildings below, acting as a natural insulator.
Locally grown vegetables reduce the need for importing, resulting in shorter transport distances and less packaging waste. Additionally, rainwater collected from the greenhouse can be used for irrigation, further enhancing resource efficiency.
Challenges and Simulations
However, implementing rooftop greenhouses is not without its challenges. The initial investment is significant, requiring technical installations and adjustments to the building's structure. Each building needs an individual risk assessment, and access to the greenhouse level often necessitates the installation of lifts.
